[...] Now that we can put video in a blog, what are we going to do with it? Adrian Miles said that video in a blog must be more than video in a blog. He makes some really good points but I still don’t think that “more” is primarily about granularity. I think it has more to do with intention and purpose (or context). As I’ve been experimenting with that, I keep bumping up against what I think is the ever more pervasive TVishness, not of the physical format of people’s videos, but of the content – the intention and purpose of it. And what I’m left with is, “why?” Why try to recreate TV on the web? If we recreate the old system of TV networks on the Internet will they be any better? Will anything have changed? Will there still be a space for alternative voices and ideas? [...]

I cannot say enough about the immediate value of Markus’ map and it’s huge potential. I hope that beyond vloggercon it will be implimented as a plugin or in some other plug in play fashion into metawiki, the source package wikipedia works on. Quite frankly, and I don’t believe I say this much, I think it’s brilliant. I don’t know if there are others, but it’s the first geographic wiki I’ve seen.

I’ve already added more than my share of info and I WILL add more, because in planning collaboratively with many disseperate groups of people on logistics it’s exactly what the doctor ordered. I can slowly aggregate and point out key locations for logistics in one space which I can easily hand out the url.

    Markus Rocks!

[...] The Undiscovered Country “Videoblogging is a new medium of expression — just as oil painting, film and jazz once were. It opens up a space where none existed before, and allows us to create all kinds of new possibilities for creative expression and communication. What we do with that space – what possibilities we invent – is up to us. There’s been much talk, for example, of democratizing media but democracy is not necessarily inherent to videoblogging, it’s just one of the many possibilities that we can create in the space that’s opened up. Ealier today I came across the Vloggercom at SF which clearly
stated everyone interested could attend and no one would be turned away.

However, when I returned home a few hours later (still had the schedule page open) and went to the schedule page, it suprisingly said the tickets were “Sold Out”!

I find this very disturbing and less than ethical. If you
are going to sell tickets on a first-come, first-serve basis, that’s fine but don’t state that no one will be turned away and then suddenly repost a sellout.

Needless to say, I was very disappointed not to be able to
attend, particularly when Vloggercom doesn’t live up to their posted T&Cs.

At a minimum, the website should state the reason for the
    sudden change of policy.

None the less, I wish you the best on Vloggercom

    Regards,

    Michael

  • 95. Verdi  |  June 7th, 2006 at 4:08 am

    Hey Michael,
All I can do is appologize and try to explain. The wording about “no one will be turned away” was written for two reasons – 1. we didn’t imagine in a million years we would sell out and 2. We debated about how much to charge for tickets realizing that most people would be traveling from out of state if not out of the country and came up with the idea that if you couldn’t afford a ticket that we would work something out (like volunteering).
    Thanks,
    Verdi

  • 96. Tao Takashi  |  June 7th, 2006 at 6:25 am

It’s also happening inside Second Life. While this might not be the same as attending in RL it’s still something ;-)

I have posted here about it.

(For me it’s too far away anyway althought it would have been cool to attend and meet all these people I only know from their videos).

I think many traditional media companies just dont know what to make of us. some will fit into what they think is appropriate. some wont. see you at vloggercon.

  • 104. Eddie  |  June 7th, 2006 at 8:30 pm

I think that “no one turned away” really was supposed to mean “no one turned away for lack of funds”. There was no intential change of policy, it just wasn’t as clear as it could have been.

The good news is that sessions in two rooms will be streamed live both days, there is IRC chat and now Second Life. No funds needed!

  • 105. Eddie  |  June 7th, 2006 at 8:36 pm

The answer is yes, there is street parking but it’s extremely limited. Unfortunately, I don’t know of any pay parking lots in the neighborhood. Worst case, you can park downtown at the Mission Street Garage and take the Muni subway up to the Church Street station. The venue is a one block walk from the station up Market Street. Good luck!

My disabled wife and I ive in Santa Monica and were planning to drive up from our home in L.A. on Friday evening. Could you be kind enough to help us with admission to vloggercon (we could pay or volunteer)? She just needs a comfortable place to sit without requiring much walking.

I don’t know who’s doing it, but I think citywide wi-fi really changes things. live vlogging. project it on a building. put a camera in the ‘hood and have them talking to office people downtown. people mashups!

    just riffing.

hey, this is great, where’s the streaming video going to be? If you are streaming with Darwin or QT streaming, and give me the rtsp address, I can set up a page which has a java chat with the #vloggercon channel, plus a live QT stream, or if you have a little .mov pointer file that points to the rtsp stream.

You can embed a java chat from freejavachat.com (though it appears to not be working right at the moment).

    cheers,
