Medium & Message: Can They Get Along?
Vlogercon session presented by jadelr and cristina cordova of Chasing Windmills http://chasingmills.blogspot.com and Dave Huth from daveMedia http://davemedia.blogspot.com
There is a content rush in online video, and it’s coming from at least two directions.
First, people whose voices have traditionally been shut out of media have glimpsed an opportunity to be heard. But what do they have to say? The search for content is a long road with many pitfalls.
Secondly, established media companies are racing to fill up the scarcity of video content on the web, and in the process, they are dumping content originally produced for other venues directly onto a web platform. Is the Net a well suited platform for content originally created for TV and movies, or is the Net a unique medium placing unique demands on what form original content should take?
Using work from DaveMedia and Chasing Windmills as examples, we will explore the relationship between content and medium, by asking challenging questions about both (Are you here to repeat what others are saying around you or do you have something original to express? Are you expressing your voice in the form of old media or are you taking into consideration the limits and possibilities of the Net?).
We’ll start the conversation by describing how we struggle with these questions in our own work. Then the discussion is open to the attenders to further explore how the characteristics inherent to Web video affect message content, and how the content, in turn, can use this new medium to better state its message.
